Cardinal Hume Centre – Homework Club


Details of Charity:

The Cardinal Hume Centre in Westminster, is a charity working with homeless young people, badly housed families, refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, helping them to obtain employment and break out of the cycle of homelessness and exclusion.

The Centre offers a hostel for homeless people aged 16-25, a family centre with a playground, and after-school clubs, homework club and a holiday programme for primary school children. There are also learning services, employment support services and support and advice services in areas of debt, welfare rights, benefits and immigration.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

The Centre provides an after-school homework club in school term time only, providing a quiet place for children and their parent to receive help with the child’s studies. On a busy club, there can be 20 children!


  • Welcome parents and children to the club
  • Volunteers will sit on a table with 1/2 children
  • Help children with homework, mostly English, Maths and project work, and some reading
  • Help to tidy up room at the end of the session

Time Commitment:

  • One afternoon per week on a Monday, Wednesday of Friday, 3.30-5.30PM, for at least one academic term

Skills Required:

  • Enthusiastic about children and education
  • Friendly, approachable and patient
  • Reliable
  • Good at maths particularly desirable!
  • A good sense of humour helps!
  • Some experience of helping primary aged children learn is desirable

Additional Benefits to the Volunteer:

  • Supported by the After School Worker
  • Receive a Centre induction (1 hour)
  • Receive a half days training on safeguarding and professional boundaries
  • Travel is reimbursed
  • All hours contribute towards your Brunel Volunteers Award, which leads to an invitation to the Brunel Volunteers Awards Ceremony
  • Hours volunteered will be recorded on your HEAR – which goes on your permanent university record.
