Brunel Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society – Multiple Volunteering Roles

Details of the Organisation:

Brunel Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society works together with organisations both within Brunel University London and external to University. Our work can influence the improvement of the campus environment as well as contributing to the conservation of wildlife and the environment off campus. We were founded at the end of June 2015 and, with the help of volunteers, have already made a positive impact on the local environment. We welcome both staff and students who wish to volunteer on a one-off basis, as well as those who are keen to get involved regularly.

Details of The Volunteering Opportunity:

You will be participating in one-off projects on campus such as :

“The Big Brunel Clean Up”
A project raising awareness about the problems of litter and landfill. We will collect rubbish from inside and around buildings on campus every night for one week, sort this into recycling and non-recyclable waste, and then place the filled bins on the quad. Each night the pile will grow, drawing attention to students. We require volunteers to help collect the litter and waste and to advertise the project.

“Water Wise”
This project aims to reduce the water consumption in halls of residence by rewarding the winning hall (the hall that reduces water by the largest percentage) with a pizza party. We would like volunteers to help advertise the project and raise awareness, volunteers to help to facilitate the project (collecting the data and publishing in internal communications) as well as volunteers to help plan and run the event at the end of the year. Full training and briefing will be given.

“Clothing Sale”
We are looking for volunteers to collect clothing donations from students on campus which will be upcycled and sold at a clothing stall. The stall will also have tie-dye and therefore requires a volunteer that is happy to learn, and then teach others, how to tie-dye.

“Local Nature Reserves”
We work with many local nature reserves clearing the bramble and scrub in order to allow other species and wildlife to thrive. Training will be given on site.

“Grow your own”
We are growing our very own produce on campus and require volunteers to help maintain the courtyard. No horticultural skills necessary, but enthusiasm is a must.

Skills required:

  • No skills necessary, applicant must be prepared to work in a team

Additional benefits to the Volunteer:

  • A chance to socialise and meet like minded people
  • The opportunity to make a positive impact to wildlife and the environment
  • Hours volunteered will be recorded on your HEAR – which goes on your permanent university record
  • All hours contribute towards your Brunel Volunteers Award, which leads to an invitation to the Brunel Volunteers Awards Dinner
