Hillingdon Young Carers – Club Assistant

Hillingdon Logo

Details of the Charity:

Young carers are children who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, a mental health problem or a substance misuse problem, taking on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.

With so many adult responsibilities, young carers often miss out on opportunities that other children have to play and learn. Many struggle educationally and are often bullied for being ‘different’. They can become isolated, with no relief from the pressures at home, and no chance to enjoy a normal childhood. They are often afraid to ask for help as they fear letting the family down or being taken into care.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

  • To encourage Young Carers to have fun and relax in a safe and welcoming environment.
  • To provide a warm welcome and friendly service.
  • To be an active team member and support the running of sporting, computer/gaming, arts and crafts and other creative activities.
  • To treat all Young Carers, and their families, with respect, dignity and courtesy.
  • Assisting in the set up and set down of the club according to procedure as required (including preparation of food, setting up and tidying up of arts and crafts/sports activities).
  • To interact with the young people and encourage them to participate in the activities on offer if they so wish.
  • Maintenance of a tidy and safe environment at all times.
  • To conduct all dealings with Young Carers in a public area in full view of others.
